Bulgarian language
Bulgarian, spoken by 9 million people, belongs to the southern subgroup of the Slavic group and remains an official language in Bulgaria. Bulgarian is similar to Macedonian, although the vocabulary is close to Church Slavonic, the current language up to now has many actively used words that are considered outdated in other languages. Furthermore, a big influence was caused by Turkic languages. Its stylistics is close to Croatian and Serbian.
All dialects can be divided into 2 groups: eastern and western. The script emerged before other Slavic languages and is also based on Cyrillic (its alphabet contains only 30 letters).
Language features
Bulgarian doesn’t have verb infinitive, case endings, with a few exceptions and the connection between words is mostly carried out by articles. At the same time, it is fundamentally different from other Slavic languages and has 4 moods and 9 tenses.
Vocabulary presents a great interest for scientists because it was originally based on general for all Slavic languages basis. The next steps of historical language development were: loanwords from Greek (Grecism), the Ottoman Empire (Turcism) and Russian (Russism) influence. Nowadays philologists also note a certain layer of loanwords from Romanian and international words from English, Latin and upgraded versions of Greek.
Interesting facts
Bulgarian is a widespread language. It is spoken in such countries as Ukraine, Canada, Australia, Turkey, and Spain, and other countries, where Bulgarian communities exist.
Some Bulgarian words can seem familiar to a Russian-speaking person, although they have a different meaning. For example, “zdravetz” means “crowfoot”, “grizha” is a“concern” and “clukha” means “gossip”. Previous cases show that the two languages' lexical proximity is likely to complicate the study.
