German is the official language in Germany, Austria, and also in Liechtenstein; it is one of the official languages in Belgium, Switzerland, and in Luxembourg. German is the 10th most common language in the world, and the 4th most widely in the Network. Moreover, German is a working language and an official language in the EU, as well as in a number of other international organizations. The modern variant of the German language was formed on the basis of the Upper Germanic language and represents its updated version. The writing is based on Latin with certain additions.
The translation of the Bible by Luther, the writings of Duden, the Grimm brothers, and a number of other figures were of great importance for the development of the language. The literary norm emerged from the Upper German dialects. But the Lower German dialects still retain certain originality and isolation. It is worth noting that the development of the German language was rather dependent on the country. At present, scholars recognize the Austrian variant, the Swiss variant, and the Germanic version. Other countries may have their own specifics in terms of language use.
Interesting facts
In 1775, a vote was held in the United States to choose the official language of the young nation. But the first one won by only one vote.
There are words in German that are difficult to match. For example, der Ohrwurm means a compulsive song that literally haunts you after you have heard it somewhere by accident. In such a case, you have to rely on the context first and try to find a way to convey the meaning.
German is characterized by long words. The longest one has 63 letters. And about the latter: only German has a ß (eszet). This letter was present in many European languages as early as the century before. But the result of the various transformations remained exclusively in German.
