English language

English is one of the most important languages of international communication, as a result of both the colonial policy of the British Empire and the international leadership of the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries. It is the mother tongue of 335 million people, making it the world's third most widely spoken language, after Chinese and also Spanish. However, it is spoken by 1.3 billion people. English is one of the 6 working and official languages of the United Nations. It is officially spoken in 54 countries around the world.

National versions of the English language

The spread of English has resulted in different national versions (Canadian, American, New Zealand, Australian, and others). There may also be a division within a country or a particular territory. However, the generality of speech, the specificity of slang usage allows separating a particular national variant into something united and at the same time separated from the rest. In general, scholars point out 3 directions of English spreading. The first group is those countries where English is the native tongue of most speakers. The second group includes states or regions (single states) where English is used as an official language. And finally, the third group includes all other areas where it is used for inter-state and international communication, including in scientific fields. By the way, the latter practice is much debated.

Features of English

English is based on the Latin alphabet; the alphabet consists of 26 letters. Orthography is one of the most complexes of the Indo-European languages. It's more in line with the speech of the British during the Renaissance.    Nowadays, however, the spelling of words and their pronunciation are at odds with each other. Many letters are unpronounceable, while a number of sounds have no representation. There are 'reading rules', but the sheer number of exceptions makes their application almost meaningless. Word order in a sentence is straightforward and strict, stricter than in many other Indo-European languages.
