Farsi is also called Persian or New Persian. It belongs to the Iranic languages and is the leading one in it. Farsi emerged as an extension of Middle Persian after the Arab conquest of Iran during the period of Islamization. It has a rich cultural tradition. It has had a great influence on the Nakh-Dagestani, Indo-Aryan, and Turkic languages. Some Persian words are also found in Russian.
Nowadays Farsi is officially used in three countries: Iran, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan. Farsi is a pluricentric language. That is, it is quite widespread, but it develops independently in different regions. Over time, such a trend will lead to the formation of several related, but already independent languages. For the time being, however, Farsi remains unified, although there may be serious differences depending on the region of use.
Prevalence
Western Farsi is widespread in Iran. It is more often understood as the language itself, which is the native language for 40 million speakers, and a total of 75 million people speak it. It is the only official language in the country and is very actively used for communication between different ethnic groups. Some groups of people who speak Farsi are found in the Persian Gulf. Since the 10th century in the East, it has been used as a language of science and literature, as well as for other arts. Farsi ranks 10th on the Internet in terms of popularity, and the number of sites created in it is just increasing over time.
Features of Farsi
Farsi shares with Dari a common Arabic alphabet. At the same time, for Persian, it is supplemented by several letters and, accordingly, sounds. In Tajikistan, the Cyrillic alphabet is actively used.
The Farsi language has very strongly developed registers. The modern standard version is used for literary speech. It is considered archaic and is characterized by a high syllable. There is also the “language of polite speech”, which is most often used in everyday life. And, finally, non-normalized dialects: they largely develop spontaneously, with features strongly influenced by the regions. They are usually used in a relaxed atmosphere. The latter version is kind of like slang.
