French

French is one of the six official and working languages at the UN. About 274 million people use it and it is official in France and Monaco, Luxembourg and Canada (Quebec), as well as Belgium and Switzerland. French is also popular in the Caribbean region and several African countries. It is widely spread in 36 countries. It is a part of the Indo-European group of languages.

 French has many dialects. Picard and Walloon with their spelling were best preserved. They are used to create literary works and occasionally press publishes different articles using these dialects. Some experts distinguish Quebec spoken language into a special subgroup. French residents, for example, don’t easily understand people living in the Canadian province.

Features

French has also diacritic letters. Ignoring appropriate symbols is a spelling mistake, but it is common also for some documents.

French grammar has some tenses intended primarily for book speech. We can notice some similarities in the constructing principles of numbers:  French specific feature is a noticeable tendency towards the twenty-decimal number, in contrast to the commonly used decimal. At the same time, many things become simplified in informal communication.

Another characteristic feature related to oral speech is the nasal vowels. They cause difficulties with correct pronunciation for foreigners.

The spread of the French language

French is also one of the main world`s culture languages (cooking, theater, dance, music, literature, architecture, painting). To confirm that fact, it is enough to remember Hugo, Delacroix, Moliere, Racine, Dumas, Rabelais, Flaubert, Verlaine, Renoir, Degas, Curie, and many others.
