Hungarian

Hungarian is also called Magyar, but this it is already considered outdated. It belongs to the Ugric group, a distant relative of Finnish and Estonian. In total, on average, about 15 million people speak Hungarian. It is the official language in Hungary and one of the few common European languages not even belonging to the Indo-European group.

With its development, Hungarian was under the influence of Slavic languages, then of Turkish, and later of German. Besides, its vocabulary was also enriched by loanwords from Greek and Latin. Romanian also had a significant influence. The writing is based on the Latin alphabet, though Hungarian runes existed and the Cyrillic alphabet is used in Vojvodina.

Distinctive features of the language

The Hungarian alphabet has 40 letters and there are 4 letters (y,z,q,w) that are used only for writing foreign words. There are no reduced vowels. Moreover, all syllables you need to pronounce very clearly. This language also has very strong articulation.

Hungarian has no grammatical gender as such, verbs have only 2 tenses (past and present). And at the same time it has a great variety of cases in the amount of 18. Some of them are used only with certain words.

Hungarian doesn`t have many dialects: in general 10. There is no much difference between the dialects, that`s why people understand each other perfectly. The Changoshi stands out (this is the name of the relevant national minority in Romania). Their variant of using Hungarian is the closest to the medieval and has more difference from the generally accepted literary norm in the present.

The most сommon letter in Hungarian is “e”. It`s quite possible to build a whole sentence where this letter is the only vowel. And you will not lose the meaning.
