If you are to go to Spain, not for tourism purposes you should legalize the documents, i.e. to affix an apostille on documents notarized in Russia, otherwise, you will have to either return or resend the official documents back. When getting some documents apostilled, power of attorney is required to represent your interests.
When you should affix an Apostille on documents:
- obtaining medical treatment
- studying abroad
- starting a new company or investing money abroad
- buying real estate
- applying for citizenship or residence permit
- concluding marriage
- getting a loan from a Spanish bank
This list is not exhaustive. The examples are the most frequent ones.
Spain doesn’t require apostille for the documents issued by the civil registry offices (birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, name change certificates) as there is a treaty for mutual legal assistance between Spain and the Russian Federation canceling apostille for such documents. Although we still recommend certifying translation in the Spanish Embassy in Moscow given the higher price of the sworn translation.
